How much should we spend on our public services? And what are we prepared to pay for through taxes? These questions were discussed at an event organised by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) as part of the Economic and Social Research Council Festival of Social Science 2007.

Robert Chote, director of IFS, set out forthcoming Budget challenges facing the Chancellor (whoever he or she may be). The presentation was followed by a panel debate between three leading political thinkers.
