On Tuesday (10 May), CentreForum hosted a keynote speech by the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Rt Hon Danny Alexander MP, at the City of London Guildhall. The topic was ''Financial services in Britain and their role in the recovery''.

Key points from the speech:

  • The Government remains committed to dealing with record borrowing and maintaining Britain's good credit status.
  • Banks must honour project MERLIN commitment to increase lending to SMEs. The Government reserves the right to take action to enforce this commitment.
  • A new Financial Conduct Authority will be set up to ensure consumer confidence in financial services and to give consumers access to financial advice through the Annual Financial Health Check.
  • The Government wants to see rebalancing of the UK economy, supported by increased exports and investment from the UK financial sector.
