The final days of summer have seen the Conservatives in the midst of a storm of new initiatives, conflicting polls and political defections.
Nevertheless, a solid core of ideas is emerging. David Cameron, the party leader, has long sought to focus political attention on issues of social breakdown and renewal. At the heart of his compassionate conservatism has been the idea of rebuilding society from the inside out, through the human relationships and human institutions that compose it.
